PHO Grand Rounds:

Skin Cancer and Tanning in the Popular Media

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada, but it is largely preventable and, when detected early, survival is high. Mass media is an influential source of health information for the public.

This presentation summarizes popular North American magazine reporting on skin cancer and tanning (i.e., risk factors, UV exposure and protection behaviours, and early detection) over a 13-year timeframe. Differences in skin cancer and tanning reporting over time, content type, and target audience will also be explored. The public health implications of the emphasis and gaps in media reporting on skin cancer and tanning will be discussed.
